Preparing for Hernia Repair: A Patient’s Guide

A hernia diagnosis often comes with more questions than answers. Here’s a simple guide to what happens before, during, and after repair, so you know what to expect at each stage.

Before surgery

You’ll have a pre-operative assessment covering your medical history, any current medications, and routine blood tests. Most hernia repairs are done under general or spinal anesthesia, so you’ll be asked to fast for a few hours beforehand. Bring someone who can drive you home afterward.

During surgery

Most hernia repairs today are done laparoscopically using a mesh to reinforce the weakened area of the abdominal wall. The procedure usually takes 45 minutes to an hour, and most patients go home the same day or the following morning.

After surgery

Mild discomfort at the incision sites is normal for the first few days. Light walking is encouraged early on, while heavy lifting and strenuous exercise should wait 4-6 weeks. Most patients return to desk work within a week.
